CGTN: Xi Urges Green Computing Push In Inner Mongolia’s Ulanqab
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for better use of wind and solar resources to develop the green computing industry during a recent visit to Ulanqab in north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, according to China Global Television Network (CGTN).
He also stressed the need to coordinate high-quality development with environmental protection and to pursue green development that prioritises ecological conservation, CGTN said in a statement.
Known as China’s "potato capital" and "oat capital", Ulanqab is now using its wind and solar resources to power a growing computing industry.
At the Chahar High-Tech Development Zone, Xi was briefed on Inner Mongolia’s progress in building a hub for China’s "East Data, West Computing" project and called for completed projects to run efficiently and follow-up projects to be finished on schedule.
Launched in 2022, the project aims to build a national computing network by directing computing demand from eastern China to western regions. Inner Mongolia is one of eight national computing hubs under the initiative.
According to official data, Ulanqab had signed 109 computing centre projects as of August 2026, and the industry generated 5.68 billion Chinese yuan (about US$849 million) in revenue from January to August, up 40.3 per cent year-on-year. (US$1 = RM4.07)
With an average annual temperature of 4.3 degrees Celsius, the city can use natural cooling to reduce data centre energy use for nearly 10 months a year. In late 2025, it unveiled a three-year plan to build a "token city" powered by green energy.
Xi also visited the Huangqihai Lake nature reserve, where he called for full implementation of China’s wetland protection law, upholding ecological red lines and protecting biodiversity, with priority given to the natural restoration of degraded wetlands.
The lake, which once came close to drying up, has recovered since a nature reserve was established there in 1993.
