Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said the market is increasingly oversold, creating opportunities for selective accumulation in fundamentally sound blue-chip stocks.

Any recovery, however, will likely remain narrow unless foreign selling moderates and banking heavyweights regain support, he said.

“Energy, renewable infrastructure and selected defensive counters may outperform, while technology stocks remain vulnerable to high global yields.

“Thus, we expect a cautious session, with bargain hunting around 1,640, placing the index within the 1,635-1,655 range,” he told Bernama.

Among the heavyweights, Maybank rose three sen to RM10.02, Public Bank gained two sen to RM4.74, while CIMB fell two sen to RM7.76. Tenaga Nasional added 10 sen to RM12.82, and IHH Healthcare was flat at RM7.87.
