RM800 Mln Sunway Medical Centre Iskandar Puteri To Meet Regional, Cross-border Healthcare Demand
ISKANDAR PUTERI, Sept 18 (Bernama) -- Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG) today marked the groundbreaking of Sunway Medical Centre Iskandar Puteri (SMCIP), its first hospital in southern Malaysia, involving a total capital expenditure of RM800 million.
The planned state-of-the-art multi-specialty tertiary hospital, located within Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, will feature a capacity of more than 400 beds upon its targeted completion in 2030.
Johor Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han said the project reflects continued investor confidence in Johor and complements the state government’s efforts to strengthen the healthcare ecosystem.
He said the facility, which is strategically located near the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, supports Johor’s growing population and its development as a regional hub for commerce, industry, healthcare, and medical tourism.
“Iskandar Puteri has strong connectivity with Singapore, a growing population, and an expanding base of businesses and skilled professionals.
“A modern medical centre here can serve Johoreans while also meeting cross-border and regional demand,” he said in his speech during the groundbreaking ceremony of SMCIP here today.
Lee added that SMCIP, which is expected to support approximately 1,400 healthcare professionals, will create employment opportunities not only for doctors and nurses but also allied health professionals, technicians, administrators and those in supply and professional services.
Meanwhile, Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah said the hospital is designed to offer a comprehensive range of specialist services, supported by advanced medical technologies and patient-centred treatment facilities.
He said these include an integrated Cancer and Nuclear Medicine Centre offering radiotherapy and nuclear medicine services, as well as a focus on key specialties such as Cardiovascular, Oncology, Neuroscience, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Orthopaedics, and Women and Children's Health.
Cheah said Sunway had always believed in Johor’s immense potential, adding that quality healthcare is essential to sustaining the state’s growth

Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long said SMCIP will be more than a standalone hospital as it will support the health and well-being of surrounding communities.
“Today’s groundbreaking marks an important step towards realising our vision for SMCIP as the healthcare anchor of this integrated ecosystem.
“The hospital will enable us to bring our clinical expertise, integrated model of care, and commitment to service excellence to communities across southern Malaysia, as well as international patients from Indonesia and Singapore,” he said.
SMCIP will form part of Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, an 809-hectare integrated and vibrant township featuring education, hospitality, entertainment, retail, commercial, and residential components.
Upon full completion, the township is expected to serve a community of more than 250,000 residents.
