China's Mingyang Eyes Bigger Role In Malaysia’s Energy Transition Under NETR

GUANGZHOU, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- Chinese clean energy giant Mingyang Smart Energy Group Co. Ltd is looking to deepen its footprint in Malaysia across offshore wind, solar, battery energy storage and hydrogen, positioning its technologies to support the country's ambitions under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
Its assistant president, general manager of International Marketing Business Centre, Mark Lou, said Mingyang, which already operates an electrical equipment manufacturing facility in Malaysia supplying energy storage projects, views the NETR’s clear policy direction as an important foundation for greater cooperation in decarbonisation and energy security.
He said the company is optimistic about Malaysia’s green energy prospects and wants to contribute its technological capabilities towards the country’s transition.
"I think it’s great to have very clear government policies and direction to establish and safeguard energy security over the years. We would like to contribute throughout the journey towards energy decarbonisation. I believe we have the capabilities, as well as a strong vision, to develop products in Malaysia," he told Bernama during a visit to the company here, today.
Also present was Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.
Lou said Mingyang's existing factory in Klang was already manufacturing electrical products, with its output mainly supporting energy storage projects.
While Malaysia may have relatively limited potential for onshore wind, he said its offshore wind prospects offer another possible avenue for future development.
He noted that Mingyang chairman Zhang Chuanwei had previously exchanged views on the development of clean energy with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during China's Greater Bay Area (GBA)-ASEAN Conference on Energy Transition and Integration in July.
Lou said the company hopes to pursue further engagement with the Malaysian government and relevant energy authorities on how it could contribute to the country’s energy security, carbon reduction and net-zero goals.
Mingyang also sees scope to broaden existing cooperation with Malaysia into wind, solar and battery energy storage system (BESS), involving both government stakeholders and energy developers.
Meanwhile, Mingyang director of International Marketing Management Amy Deng said Sarawak offers strong potential for integrated renewable energy development, given its established hydropower base and the state government’s ambition to develop green energy alongside local supply chains.
She said Mingyang could offer more than individual equipment such as wind turbines and electrolysers, with its capabilities extending across an integrated value chain from renewable power generation to hydrogen production and local offtake.
"Sarawak has a very solid foundation in hydropower, which is a very good resource," she said, adding that Malaysia’s maritime resources could also open possibilities for wind farms that could eventually be integrated with hydrogen production.
"I think we can explore more cooperation scenarios, such as developing wind farms linked to hydrogen production, and potentially using that hydrogen to produce products such as methanol or ammonia. It is about developing the entire supply chain,” she added.
She said Mingyang's technological innovation remained one of its competitive strengths internationally, particularly in offshore wind, including typhoon-resistant turbines and floating offshore wind technology.
Besides Malaysia, the company is expanding its new-energy business across Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Americas, West Asia and Africa, focusing on wind, solar, energy storage and hydrogen.
The site visit was held in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Media Forum (APMF), organised by Xinhua News Agency and its partners. The APMF will officially open in Shenzhen on Saturday under the theme "Building a Path to Shared Prosperity for the Asia-Pacific Community: Media Consensus and Action".
The forum is being held during the 2026 APEC “China Year”, ahead of the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which Shenzhen will host on Nov 18 and 19.
