Bursa Malaysia Opens Higher On Resilient Domestic Demand

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia opened higher on Monday, supported by resilient domestic demand, although trading is expected to remain cautious as the ongoing earnings season keeps investors selective, an analyst said.

At 9.03 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) edged up 1.46 points to 1,737.94 from last Friday’s close of 1,736.48.

The benchmark index opened 1.83 points higher at 1,738.31.

Market breadth was positive, with gainers outnumbering losers 173 to 130. A total of 293 counters were unchanged, 2,278 untraded and 46 suspended.

Turnover stood at 147.53 million shares worth RM71.13 million.

Apex Securities Bhd analyst said the FBM KLCI is expected to trade with a mildly positive bias this week, supported by Wall Street’s overnight rebound and resilient domestic demand.

However, trading is likely to remain cautious as investors stay selective, with stock performance largely driven by corporate results and company developments, the analyst said.

“The upside could remain modest, however, as elevated US Treasury yields continue to weigh on global risk appetite, while ongoing West Asia tensions could keep oil prices volatile and add to inflationary concerns.

“Overall, we expect investors to remain selective, with defensive and domestically driven counters likely to remain relatively resilient amid ongoing external uncertainties,” the analyst said in a note.
