12 Insurance Policies Related To Nepal Disaster Settled, Says Piam

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- A total of 12 insurance policies involving Malaysians affected by the floods and landslides in Nepal have been fully settled by insurance companies, according to the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM).

PIAM chief executive officer Chua Kim Soon said that more than 50 insurance policies had been identified in connection with the incident, with its member companies continuing to process claims and provide assistance to the victims’ next of kin.

“We expect more of these claims to be resolved in the coming weeks,” he told reporters at PIAM’s Monsoon Readiness Media Roundtable, here today.

Chua said PIAM is working closely with Bank Negara Malaysia to reach out to the next of kin and facilitate the claims process.

He said the policies identified comprised travel insurance, annual personal accident insurance and group personal accident coverage provided by employers.

PIAM also urged affected families requiring assistance with claims registration and notification to contact the association for support.

On Aug 26, flash floods and landslides struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district and the Nepal-Tibet border area following heavy rain, damaging infrastructure, disrupting communications and hampering search and rescue operations.

Of the 5,285 individuals classified as missing and unaccounted for following the disaster, 636 were foreign nationals from 34 countries, including 54 Malaysians.
