ABB Bank’s Turnaround Featured In IE Business School Case Study

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- Azerbaijan’s ABB Bank has become the subject of a case study at IE Business School, which examines the lender’s strategic and digital transformation since 2016 and its growth plans for 2026 to 2028.

The case study, titled “ABB Bank’s Next Frontier: Choosing the Scope and Path of Growth”, was developed by IE Business School Professor Antonio Zabaleta Moreno. It will be used as a real-world business case for students and covers the bank’s adoption of an Agile operating model, its technological modernisation and its priorities for development driven by artificial intelligence (AI).

“The fact that our experience is being studied as a case at such a respected academic institution as IE Business School demonstrates that the positive experience we have gained is also generating interest within the international business community,” said ABB Bank Chairman of the Management Board, Abbas Ibrahimov.

Meanwhile, Professor Moreno said the bank had undergone a remarkable evolution to become an innovative digital pioneer, adding that he looked forward to students exploring the strategic choices shaping the future of this ambitious, AI-first bank.

According to the bank in a statement, the case traces ABB Bank’s progress from the challenging circumstances it faced in 2016 to a new stage of development achieved through transformation.

Among the indicators cited in the case is the growth of the bank’s mobile application, whose users rose from about 171,000 in 2020 to 2.6 million in 2025. Over the same period, the app’s rating rose from 1.2 to 4.9, while the bank’s Net Promoter Score (NPS) for digital channels, a measure of customer loyalty, increased from 48 to 77.

The bank now operates 14 Agile domains and more than 80 Agile squads. It said adopting Agile ways of working had cut the time needed to develop and launch a new product from 243 days to 59 days.

More than 1,113 people have graduated from ABB Tech Academy, which the bank set up in 2019, with 83 per cent of graduates securing employment.

The case study identifies wider use of AI, expanded digital capabilities, entry into new markets and the development of services integrated into customers’ daily lives as key priorities for the bank’s next stage of growth. The bank describes this last goal as becoming a lifestyle partner.
