MAPSU Calls For Continued Efforts To Tackle Healthcare Workforce Shortages

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- The Joint Council of Presidents and Secretaries-General of the Health Ministry Workers Union (MAPSU) hopes the government will continue to address workforce shortages and heavy workloads in the healthcare sector, in addition to improving staff welfare, particularly in rural areas.

Its president Ajulahin Japin said improvements to allowances and incentives, workplace facilities and greater attention to the challenges faced by staff in rural areas are important to ensure their welfare remains protected.

“Recognising their sacrifices and commitment can not only boost their motivation but also help strengthen healthcare service delivery to the people. We hope this approach, which prioritises the welfare of healthcare workers, will continue to be implemented consistently,” he said.

He said this while welcoming the announcement of welfare initiatives for civil servants, particularly healthcare workers, under Budget 2027.

Among the measures announced were an increase in the Post-Basic Incentive from RM100 to RM200 a month for eligible nurses and paramedics, and an increase in the Air Health Service Incentive from RM30 to RM100.

Ajulahin said the increase in incentives is a recognition of the specialised skills and responsibilities of healthcare workers, including those serving in rural areas of Sabah and Sarawak, where they face travel and logistical challenges.

He also welcomed the announcement of special financial assistance for civil servants and government pensioners, as well as an increase in the minimum pension to help ease the cost-of-living burden.
