TNB Genco Continues Investing In Fleet Reliability, Renewables And Storage Pipeline
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd (TNB Genco) continues to invest in the reliability of its existing generation fleet while advancing its renewable and storage pipeline, including a hybrid hydro-floating solar project combining 595 megawatts (MW) of floating solar with 1,190 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage, targeted for completion in 2028.
The RM1.96 billion project is located at the Tasik Kenyir Dam in Terengganu. Upon its completion, the facility is slated to become the largest floating solar power plant in Southeast Asia.
“As Malaysia's largest power producer, TNB Genco plays a central role in shaping the country's energy mix,” said TNB Genco’s managing director Datuk Shahrir Abdul Latiff.
Hence, TNB Genco's transformation strategy focuses on three parallel tracks, namely sustaining the reliability of existing generation assets, developing renewable and storage capacity to support the energy transition, and building capability in emerging technologies for the longer term.
The approach reflects TNB's broader commitment to advancing Malaysia's energy transition while safeguarding the reliability the nation depends on.
“Reliability and sustainability should be pursued as complementary objectives rather than competing priorities, consistent with TNB Genco's approach to maintaining system dependability while progressing the transition to cleaner energy infrastructure,” he said at the International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES) 2026 recently.
Shahrir spoke at the session entitled “Pioneering the Future: Next-Gen Renewables and Clean Fuels”, where he represented TNB Genco alongside representatives from Sarawak Energy, Malakoff Corporation Berhad and the ASEAN Centre for Energy.
Among others, the session examined the pathways required to scale emerging clean energy solutions, including technology readiness, system integration, commercial viability, as well as the policy and investment frameworks necessary to move these solutions from innovation to widespread deployment.
