Malaysia’s Strong Fundamentals Support Capital Market Opportunities

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s strong economic fundamentals will continue to support investment opportunities across its capital markets, Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Johan Mahmood Merican said.

He said Malaysia’s economic model also emphasised strong governance, providing Malaysians with greater opportunities to invest.

However, investor education and improved financial literacy were critical to ensuring Malaysians could make informed investment decisions based on their personal circumstances, investment objectives and risk appetite, he said.

“I think the importance of avoiding financial scams is really becoming a real social issue, particularly here in Malaysia.

“We wouldn't know what's too good to be true if we do not have the set levels of financial literacy and investor education to differentiate between what’s a credible investment proposition and what is really completely unrealistic or illusive,” he said in his keynote remarks at the opening ceremony of the InvestSmart X Bursa Marketplace Fair 2026.

Johan said the scale of investment scams in Malaysia was alarming, with Malaysians losing approximately RM1.47 billion to such scams in 2025.

He said he hoped the InvestSmart X Bursa Marketplace Fair 2026 would help Malaysians make more informed investment decisions and better protect themselves against scams.

Investment opportunities in the Malaysian market remained attractive, with the capital market offering various options through fund managers and brokers to cater to different investment objectives and risk profiles, he added.

The Securities Commission Malaysia and Bursa Malaysia collaborated on the InvestSmart initiative, held on Sept 5 - 6.

The inaugural collaboration combines investor education, market insights and practical guidance, and is intended to better equip participants with the knowledge to evaluate investment opportunities, understand risks and identify potential scams.
