Effective Governance Key For Innovation, Accountability - TNB

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) — Effective governance is vital for organisations to innovate confidently while ensuring that accountability, ethics and human judgement remain central to every critical decision, said Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) chief digital and information officer, Azlan Ahmad.

This is particularly important as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes an increasingly integral part of organisational operations, he said.

At TNB, this philosophy is reflected through the TNB Human-AI Interaction Model (THAIM), where the level of human involvement is determined by the risk and criticality of each use case, said Azlan.

“While artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance operational efficiency and support better decision-making, sensitive areas such as safety, health, and critical infrastructure continue to require meaningful human judgement and oversight,” he said.

Azlan said this during a panel discussion titled, "If An AI Agent Makes the Wrong Call, Who Owns the Outcome?" at the ASEAN Innovation Business Platform (AIBP) Conference & Exhibition Malaysia 2026, which was held recently. 

He emphasised that successful AI adoption depends both on technology and culture. 

“Rather than restricting the use of AI, TNB has focused on empowering its workforce through education, clear governance and shared principles that enable responsible innovation across the organisation,” he said, adding that responsible AI will be fundamental to the next phase of enterprise transformation. 

“By combining governance, technology, and human expertise, TNB continues to build secure, trusted digital capabilities that strengthen operational resilience while supporting Malaysia's digital future,” he said.

The annual closed-door AIBP Conference & Exhibition Malaysia brings together over 600 senior stakeholders to discuss digital transformation and enterprise innovation.
