Next Of Kin Can Check Deceased Family Members' Takaful And Insurance Coverage Via Semak Kasih

KUALA TERENGGANU, June 27 (Bernama) -- Next of kin can now easily determine whether their deceased loved ones had family takaful or life insurance coverage through Semak Kasih, a one-stop online portal developed by the Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) and Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM), to reconnect families with protection benefits that may otherwise remain unclaimed.
The chief executive officer of MTA, Mohd Radzuan Mohamed, said the portal has been introduced to help beneficiaries trace unclaimed benefits of takaful certificates and life insurance policies that surviving family members are unaware of.
"Previously, anyone wishing to make such an inquiry had to contact each insurance company and takaful operator individually. With this portal, consumers only need to use a single platform to check whether a deceased family member had coverage with any of the 25 participating insurance and takaful companies," he told Bernama after the Karnival Celik Kewangan Terengganu event held at Mayang Mall, here.
Also present were Deputy Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia Adnan Zaylani Mohamad Zahid and chief executive officer of LIAM Mark O’Dell.
Mohd Radzuan said users are only required to provide the deceased's name and identification number, and upload a clear copy of the death certificate before the system searches a database comprising records from 25 participating companies. "Once the search is completed, the system generates a report identifying the companies that have matching records together with their contact details. The next of kin can then contact the relevant companies directly to determine whether any benefits are payable," he explained.
Mohd Radzuan said the portal is not a claims platform, but serves as a guide by directing users to the relevant takaful operators or insurance companies without disclosing certificate or policy details, coverage amounts or claim status.
He said the platform is particularly beneficial in cases where family members are unaware that the deceased had purchased insurance or takaful coverage, including policies taken up years earlier, such as mortgage-related life insurance, which may have remained active after the property was sold. "Some individuals also kept their financial affairs private or lived alone, resulting in family members being unaware of existing insurance policies or takaful certificates. This platform helps ensure such benefits can eventually reach the rightful beneficiaries," he added.
A database containing approximately 37 million policy records had been established, enabling search results to be generated almost instantly without requiring users to wait days or weeks for an initial response.
LIAM CEO Mark O'Dell said that the service is provided free of charge as part of the insurance and takaful industry's commitment to ensuring eligible beneficiaries receive the financial protection intended for them, thereby helping provide continuity and financial security for their families.
O’Dell said Semak Kasih addresses this gap by providing a single, centralised search platform that helps families identify the relevant takaful operator or life insurer and take the necessary next steps to enquire about potential benefits.
"Free and easy to use, the portal offers greater peace of mind while helping beneficiaries access financial support that may rightfully belong to them. Through the portal, members of the public can check whether a deceased individual had a family takaful certificate or life insurance policy with participating providers, identify the relevant takaful operator or life insurer; and obtain the necessary takaful operators or life insurer contact details to facilitate further enquiries and claims-related processes.
"To perform a search, users simply need to visit the Semak Kasih portal at semak-kasih.mycoverage.my; create an account using their name, MyKad/identification number, email address and mobile number; log into the portal upon successful registration; and submit an enquiry by providing the deceased individual's identification details and uploading a clear copy of the death certificate," he explained.
He said that if a matching record is found, users will be provided with the contact details of the relevant takaful operator or life insurer for further assistance. "If no matching record is found, the portal will display the message ‘No takaful certificates insurance policies found in our records’”, he continued.
O’Dell said the Semak Kasih initiative reflects “our commitment to ensuring that no family is left unaware of the financial protection arrangements made by their loved ones.”
"During a difficult period of loss, families should not have to face unnecessary challenges in determining whether takaful or insurance coverage exists. By bringing the industry together on a single platform, Semak Kasih helps reduce uncertainty for families during such moments. We hope this initiative will provide greater clarity, convenience and peace of mind to Malaysians nationwide," he added.
Developed jointly by MTA and LIAM under the purview of Bank Negara Malaysia, Semak Kasih serves as a one-stop public service platform that enables members of the public to facilitate checking whether a deceased family member had any family takaful certificates or life insurance policies with participating takaful operators and life insurers.
